The Scripturizer project is closed. Thus there will be no more updates.

You are free to use, update, and advance the plugin at your own risk, but note that there is no support nor any guarantees that the plugin will work with the latest version of WordPress.

If you need a Scripture reference plugin, try some active projects, such as:

WP-Bible (very similar functionality as Scripturizer)
WP ESV Plugin
RefTagger (by Logos Software)

Version 1.8 Released

Hi, I’m petervcook, there were a couple of features I thought would make great additions to Scripturizer, so I contacted LO and asked if I could join the project to give the additions back to the WordPress community.

Scripturizer 1.8 was released today. The big new feature is rollover tooltips, your users can now see the ESV version of the verse just by rolling their mouse over the reference, no need to click. It also sports an easier installation process and streamlined admin interface.

Here is a full list of features:

Added rollover tooltips
ESV Show/Hide links can now be used even in the default translation links to another translation
Show/Hide links changed from [+/-] to [show]
Easier installation
Streamlined code & smaller file size
Redesigned Admin Panel to match WordPress 2.5
CSS Code moved to an external file
Added support for periods and endashes in the reference (ex. John 3.16–17)

This new version requires WordPress 2.1 in order to use all the features, while basic functionality will still work in WordPress 2.0.

Scripturizer 1.7 Stable Release: a New Home and a New Name

Announcing Scripturizer 1.7 stable, renamed “The Holy Scripturizer” and moved to its new home at the WP plugins directory.

A New Home for Scripturizer

A few months ago WordPress opened its new plugins directory in an effort to centralize and standardize plugin development. It has taken me a bit to catch up with the Joneses, but today I transfered the newly updated Scripturizer 1.7, stable version, to this new directory.

A New Name: “The Holy Scripturizer”

Due to conflicts with other similarly-named plugins, I edited Scripturizer’s name to “The Holy Scripturizer.” I like this name better than the original, for it highlights a seldom-heard aspect about God’s Word–it is holy.

A New Release: 1.7 Stable

Along with a new home comes a newly updated code base. This latest release (download 1.7 stable via Scripturizer’s new home) includes the following important updates:

Support for the Septuagint (LXX), New Revised Standard Version (NRSV), and New English Bible (NET) versions.
Compliance with the new Bibleref standards for semantic Bible markup. (Learn more about Bibleref.)

While users of the 1.7 beta version are not at risk, all users of all previous versions are encouraged to update to 1.7 stable.

What are the implications of these updates?

All further development and support of the Holy Scripturizer plugin will be facilitated through the new plugins directory. So, please direct all support requests through the proper channels at the new home.

The German version of Scripturizer will also be migrated to the new plugin directory.

Scripturizer 1.7 Beta German

Attention my German, Lutheran, Harp (or other German-inspired brew) fans , or in any other wise German-speaking audience: With the “across-the-pond” help of my German virtual friend, I have completed the beta release of Scripturizer 1.7 in German. (May a new wave of Reformation sweep over the cradle of the Reformation!

German Usage Instructions

Usage instructions are the same as for the English version with two exceptions:

German book names and abbreviations (see lists below).
Verse/chapter format. (You may use a comma instead of a colon, such as Genesis 1,4, which will link to Genesis chapter 1 verse 4.)

Why Beta Status? … Mostly spelling/typo issues.

The German code should be very safe to use on any recent version of WordPress. I am leaving the plugin as Beta status because there are probably misspellings, etc., that are a result of me not being a German speaker. So, I am relying on my German-speaking friends to help make corrections to the book names and abbreviations.

One particular difficulty in coding for German was getting Scripturizer to recognize Umlaut characters. I have a suspicion that there are more Umlaut characters that should appear in the full book names. Therefore, if you speak German please help me out by pointing out whether the books are spelled properly.

Scripturizer 1.7 Beta

Hello Friends,

I’m happy to announce Scripturizer 1.7 Beta, which I hope will solve some of the compatibility issues with WordPress 2.1+. Also, this release brings Scripturizer up to speed with the new API for the Bible Gateway.

Updates include the following:

Depreciation of Static Mode: 1.7 does away with static mode. I don’t think anyone used this mode anyway, so I’m not expecting many tears. Due to complications in database updates, static mode may have been causing problems with WP 2.1; therefore, it has been granted access to the binary receptacle.
Bible Gateway Compatibility: The Bible Gateway has changed its linking API since the creation of Scripturizer. Therefore, links to Bible versions provided by the Gateway were not working properly. I have updated the current script to cover all of the Gateway’s versions through the English translations (almost 30 altogether). When I get the time to complete the array I will update the rest of the versions. (If there are any volunteers to complete the array for me, I’d love the help!)
Reset/Uninstall Feature: If you ever need to uninstall or re-install Scripturizer you will appreciate the new reset button. This feature deletes the Scripturizer options from your WordPress database.
Updated options panel: I edited the options panel to be slightly more organized and trimmed. For example, the install instructions only appear when you actually need to initialize the script instead of being displayed all the time.

WordPress 2.1+ Compatibility

I have tested Scripturizer 1.7 on WP 2.1.2, and it appears to be working well. Please let me know if you run into any snags. (I do not recommend using WP 2.1 due to the security breach….)

Dear Scripturizer users,

I have added a new page to explain how to use Scripturizer’s features. So far I have instructions on how to create links using both your default Bible version and user-specified versions. (Please know that you can set your own default version to any of the supported versions listed on this page.)

In the near future I will add further instructions on how to use the ESV “get verse text” feature. (Which, speaking of this feature, I am hoping to re-program it along the lines of Simon’s nice Ajax-powered ESV technique in the next Scripturizer release.)

WP 2.1 Compatibility Notice

I have not yet thoroughly tested Scripturizer on WP 2.1. I think it should work just fine in dynamic mode, as opposed to static mode. But again, I have not tested it thoroughly. For the time being, I recommend not using static mode.

If you are running WP 2.1 please let me know if you have success or find problems with the Scripturizer plugin.

A Better Regular Expression for the Scripturizer 1.5

, who has his own great ESV WordPress plugin, the regular expressions in Scripturizer have received the first round of much needed updates. The latest code allows the Scripturizer to parse references that span multiple chapters, such as Genesis 2:1-4:5.

New Scripturizer Development Server Hosted by Google Projects

This evening I launched a free Google Projects site to host development of the Scripturizer project. Google’s array of development tools will enable us to manage bug tracking and versioning in a collaborative environment.

1.6 Dev – Westminster Shorter Catechism

I’ve been playing around with a new feature which allows users to reference the CCEL version of the Westminster Shorter Catechism, and I’d like to get some feedback.

If you are interested in trying out the new feature, download Scripturizer Dev 1.6 and use either of the following two reference formats in your posts:
